Diving has a way of connecting people. From new friends to burning flames to long-lost loves, the bonds we form while diving have the potential to last a lifetime.
At its heart, #facesofdive is all about connecting divers worldwide, but to take it a step further, in this installment we’d like to profile the unique way that scuba and watersport can help foster the romantic connection between two people.
Air Force veteran and Dive Instructor Cara Teeter, also known on Instagram as @twinsetdiving, met her husband, John, while chasing her passion for diving.

“I joke that he was my first diver I certified when I became an instructor,” she remembers with a grin. “When we got married—I was a Divemaster, and I suggested that we go do at least a couple dives on our honeymoon. He was lukewarm to the idea and continued to be during his pool training, but once we got him down to the big marine life and the reefs and cenotes, he came up and said, ‘Yep, this is gonna be our thing!’”
From that point forward, Cara and her husband have used diving as a catalyst for their relationship—never pushing each other—but enjoying their respective journeys together, hand in hand.
Love at First Dive
After those initial honeymoon dives, John rapidly climbed the pyramid of dive certs, then the two bought a boat and started a business, Poseidon Rising Charters.
Diving together as a couple heightens their sense of teamwork and communication.
“There’s no harder way to communicate than when you’re underwater and can’t use words,” she says, “but I think that makes what we do together much more powerful. I think we’re a really good team. You start to be able to know what the other person is thinking and respond. And especially in stressful situations, that’s so important!”
Today, Cara and John are consummate dive partners. Over the years, they’ve done all of their technical training together. That level of co-understanding and stress management now informs and supplements everything else they do in their relationship.
“We’re a well-oiled machine—when we go out and do something, we both know our logistical piece of the puzzle,” she explains. ”Diving has really shown us that, together, we can tackle difficult problems with ease.”
Taking the broad view, Cara’s grateful that she has someone to share her passion with. She often encounters people who are unhappy with what they’re doing in life and she always encourages them to find something that “lights their soul on fire.”
“You have to go after that with your whole heart!” she stresses. “And once you’ve found it, to also find someone that shares that same passion, I think is really important. It’s more than a hobby, it’s more than a business. It’s what binds us together!”
