What Are 7MM Wetsuits? 

7mm wetsuits are the most popular cold water wetsuits on the market. They are used exclusively for divers in cold water. The thicker material allows divers go deeper and into colder water because it will help retain body heat and keep you comfortable even in deep waters. 

When Should You Use a 7MM Wetsuit?

7mm wetsuits are meant for cold water, but how cold of temperatures really warrant a wetsuit that’s this thick?  You should use a 7mm wetsuit when water temperatures are between 45 - 60 degrees Fahrenheit (8 - 15 degrees Celsius). While it’s not cold enough for there to be ice in the water, it will still certainly take your breath away if you’re not prepared for it.

Is There Ever a Bad Time to Use a 7MM Wetsuit?

You should not use a 7mm wetsuit if you plan to take a dive in warmer waters. If you use a wetsuit that’s too thick and insulating for the environment, you risk overheating. Doing so may make you dehydrate faster than normal.

What to Look for in a 7MM Wetsuit

The thickness of your wetsuits fabric isn’t the only thing you need to consider when buying a cold water wetsuit. Here are some other features you may want to consider in your 7mm wetsuit:

• Full-stretch fabric: Most wetsuits are made with highly flexible material. However, thicker material can make it harder to move around underwater. To compensate for the thick fabric, our 7mm wetsuit should compensate by being made from a full-stretch construction.
• Neoprene-laminate blend: The fabric of your 7mm wetsuit must be good at insulating your body heat, or else it won’t do you any good in cold waters. Some wetsuits make you choose between neoprene and laminate material, but there are others that incorporate the two together, giving you the benefits of both materials.
• Anatomically correct design pattern: The wrong design pattern can add uncomfortable pressure points to your shoulders and other parts of your body. But if your suit is designed with an anatomically correct pattern, those pressure points are eliminated and you can swim much more comfortably.
